Liverpool defender Glen Johnson is set to turn down a move to Roma and instead sign a contract renewal with Liverpool.

With Steven Gerrard now leaving to America at the end of the current season, Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers is keen on keeping some of his more experienced players to assist the settling in of his youngsters at Anfield.

Italian outfit AS Roma interested in Johnson since he could play on both flanks, and offered him a move to the Serie A under Bosman ruling.

However, the Englishman is now set to remain in England, where he is likely to finish his career.

Meanwhile, Liverpool will have their work cut  out in the Capital One Cup, in which they face Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. Many Liverpool fans have been hoping to see their club lift some silverware this season, which will see Steven Gerrard lift a trophy in his final times at Merseyside.

The Reds take on Chelsea on Tuesday, following a 1-1 draw at Anfield.
