Gomis Would Not Take Wage Cut

Bafetimbi Gamis has revealed that a move to Premier League club Newcastle United fell through because they asked him to amend his wage demands.

The 28 year old striker rejected several moves from around Europe inclusing Swansea and Newcastle. The French international has one year left on his current contract at Lyon and they have been trying to offload the player for the past year.

Gomis does not want to be forces out of the club and it looks likely he will leave the club on a free transfer in the summer.

It looked like Gomis would move to Newcastle late on in the transfer windwow but admits he would not take a wage decrease.

“I had a talk with Newcastle’s coach and we found an agreement,” Gomis told TV show Canal Football Club.

“Then, there were talks with Lyon, there was a first offer – which was refused and then a second one, which was accepted.”

“Newcastle then came back to me and asked me to make an effort on wages – but I never asked anything as it was my club which wanted to transfer me, so the effort had to be made by Newcastle or Lyon.”

Gomis confirmed that a new deal with Lyon was highly unlikely.

“Now I think after what has been said and done, it is not conceivable to talk about any prolongation,” he added.
