The striker was persuaded to stay in Italy

Gonzalo Higuain has admitted that he turned down the chance to play in England’s top flight after a five minute conversation with Napoli manager Maurizio Sarri.

According to reports, the Argentina international was apparently the subject of interest for Chelsea, Liverpool and Arsenal in the recent transfer window.

This is due to the fact that the 28-year old has scored 22 goals in as many Serie A games already this campaign.

However, Chelsea were initially put off by Napoli’s ÂŁ76 million valuation of Higuain, whereas attempts from Liverpool and Arsenal were halted when the centre forward insisted he wanted to stay in Naples.

‘he got the best out of me’

Where speaking to the official Serie A television channel, Higuain said: “Sarri? He convinced me with his sincerity, it took five minutes for him to convince me to stay and he got the best out of me.”

“So far this has been the best year of my career, but we have to be perfect to win,” added the former Real Madrid man.

“It’s hard to top the record of 35 goals in a Serie A season, but I hope I can make it.”
