The former Blue believes Chelsea’s transfer policy has left “gaps” in their squad that need to be quickly filled.

Le Saux believes frustrated manager Antonio Conte is pretty down about the lack of new signings to reinforce his squad has seeped into the confidence of his players and led to the nerves that produced the calamity

The West London club brought in four players this summer at a cost of some ÂŁ130m. They are hoping to capture at least another three by the transfer deadline on August 31.

He thinks these next upcoming 13 days are very crucial for his old team – as is a good performance at Wembley on Sunday.

“Chelsea have left gaps in their squad that need filling,” he said. “You can have a game like they did against Burnley, have a man sent off and lose, But conceding three goals is damaging. If that continues, you have to say they have left a hole.

“Alvaro Morata is a replacement for Diego Costa in attack, but wing-back is an area that has not been strengthened. And they badly need somebody that can plug that gap in midfield.

“If I was in that dressing room, I would have been really disappointed that we had sold Nemanja Matic. He was one of their best players.

“That does not send a great message. It seemed odd – and to Manchester United as well.
