Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola is having difficulty in the pre-season matches without the team’s World Cup stars. City began their International Champions Cup campaign with a 0-1 defeat to Borussia Dortmund. This was followed by a 1-2 defeat to Champions League runners-up Liverpool. Manchester City are currently without 14 out of their 15 players who competed in the World Cup. The only World Cup player in City’s pre-season squad is Portugal’s Bernardo Silva.

Speaking ahead of City’s encounter against Bayern Munich today, Guardiola said, “That is not the easiest situation for any manager, not just for me. I would prefer to be all together but I think for [Bayern Munich manager] Niko Kovac or for the other managers it’s the same, the calendar is the calendar and we will have to adapt. We would prefer for players to come back as soon as possible but it is not possible.”

City goalkeeper Claudio Bravo said that it is instrumental for the young players to make the most out of the pre-season matches. The Chilean said, “We have young guys that have a lot of potential. I think we have to give them that extra push so that they take advantage of this opportunity because it’s the door they have for the future. They shouldn’t see these matches as merely friendly matches but rather an open door to be competing for bigger things.”

Manchester City will take on Bayern Munich today at Miami.
