Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola said that the Premier League is way different than the Champions League. Manchester City confirmed their place in the knockout stages of the Champions League with a 2-2 draw against Lyon. After a goalless first half, Maxwell Cornet gave Lyon the lead before Aymeric Laporte equalised for City.

In the 81st minute, Cornet scored his second of the match to restore Lyon’s lead. However, just two minutes later, Sergio Aguero levelled things back for Manchester City.

Despite qualifying for the knockout stages of the Champions League, Manchester City’s performance in the Champions League have been inferior compared to those in the Premier League.

Guardiola said that Manchester City should not be expected to perform in the Champions League the way they perform in the Premier League.

The Spaniard said, “The Champions League showed me again it is a different competition, especially for one reason: the players are better. You have time in the Premier League, you can lose games in the Premier League and you still have 38 games to do. Here, there is huge quality. It is another completely different competition.”

Guardiola added, “One of Inter or Tottenham will be in the Europa League! You cannot imagine how good they are. And one of Liverpool, PSG, Napoli will be in the Europa League! You cannot imagine how good they are. After losing our first game against Lyon, it is not a surprise we saw this again today. So with one game left, we will be there again in February again.

Manchester City’s next match is a Premier League encounter against Bournemouth on Saturday.
