Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola said that the club could make one more signing before the transfer window closes if it is a ‘special’ player.

Guardiola said, “We will see, if we decided to bring another one it’s because it is a special player. It can be a special player for the future not to have one more player for the number.

All the time I’ve been here, even the first season, I have been satisfied with the squad we have and last season again and this season as well. Monday we will all be together, to start thinking about what we need to do to maintain the level of last season.”

So far, the reigning Premier League champs have made only one summer signing in Riyad Mahrez for a club record fee of £60 million. City were close to signing Jorginho from Napoli but the Italian eventually decided to reunite with Maurizio Sarri at Chelsea. Regarding that deal, Guardiola said, “So… yes, we were close. But in the end Jorginho decided [to join Chelsea]. We thought [a deal for Jorginho] was done, but at the last turn he decided to go to Chelsea. Similar to Alexis, he decided to go to United. I want a player who likes to come to Manchester City and he doesn’t like to come, so maybe he was a little bit late to announce that.

But, when he decided not to come, then don’t come, good luck at Chelsea and I think English football is going to discover an exceptional holding midfielder.”

Manchester City take on Chelsea in the Community Shield at Wembley. They then begin their Premier League campaign against Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium.
