Manchester City coach Pep Guardiola has taken a sly dig at title rivals Liverpool following the Citizens’ defeat to Norwich this weekend.

Meanwhile, Liverpoop managed to increase the gap to five points with a perfect 3-1 win over Newcastle.

“Five points (behind Liverpool) is five points – but we are in September,” Guardiola said.

“What are we supposed to do? Say ‘it’s September and congratulations to Liverpool, you are champions?’

“Not for one second am I going to doubt my players.”

Defensive mistakes cost Man City the three points, but Guardiola was protective of his players following the game. He said,

“Nico (Otamendi) doesn’t know someone is coming and nobody tells him,” he said. “Sometimes you know we make mistakes. I think sometimes we forget these guys are human.”

“Football is quick, things can go wrong and I must see what I can do to help them.”

Manchester City will try to claw back the deficit when they face Watford at home next week after playing their first Champions League game against Shakhtar Donetsk.
