Pep Guardiola has full confidence in his team despite the recent slump in form

Ricardo Pereira’s 81st-minute strike inflicted Manchester City their third defeat in their last four games as the Citizens went down 2-1 to Leicester City on Boxing Day. After a strong start to the season, a recent slump in form has severely derailed City’s campaign, dealing a huge blow to their hopes of retaining the Premier League crown.

However, Guardiola has pointed to the fact that his team has already claimed 44 points at the halfway mark of the season, which, in another year, can be a title-winning tally. He believes that it is just a case of his team’s efforts being been bettered by Liverpool and Spurs.

“Think about the game, not the results,” he said. “Today we finished the [first] leg of the season, we have an incredible amount of points.

“The reality is there are two or three teams better than us. There’s no sense talking about Liverpool, we have to try to win [the next] game.”

The manager further reiterated that they have only themselves to blame for the Boxing Day debacle and the missed chances proved costly at the end.

“We lost again, we have to accept the reality. It’s quite similar to Stamford Bridge and Crystal Palace, today the first chance they score,” he said.

“We were better and then they score. Except for five to 10 minutes at the end of the first half [we played well], the second half was no big issue. The final pass, the final shot, we miss that, the teams punish us.”

However, the manager is optimistic heading into the games against Southampton and Liverpool and he believes that his team can turn the tables.

Guardiola added: “Good results make a miracle in the mind. We practice little details, the same way as during three years together.

“Now there will be doubts, but after what they did in the recent past, I will never doubt them. I have to work on how to help them come back to the way we want to play.”
