Arsenal keen to beat Manchester United for his signature

Arsenal have submitted an £28m bid for Sporting Lisbon’s defensive midfielder – William Carvalho, according to The Sun.

The North-London club initially offered a fee of £20m to their Sporting counterparts, which was swiftly rejected by the Portuguese side.

Carvalho currently has a release clause of £37m, however Lisbon could be forced to accept a smaller fee, given their financial difficulties at the moment.

The Angolan-born 23-year-old has won many admirers for his performances for both club and country over the past twelve months – and further enhanced his reputation following a polished performance in Portugal’s 1-0 win over England at the U21 European Championships, on Thursday evening.

Stiff competition

Should Arsene Wenger wish to land Carvalho in the upcoming transfer window, then he will face competition from Manchester United, for the highly-rated midfielder’s signature.

United manager Louis Van Gaal also wants to strengthen his midfield, as the Old Trafford outfit want to push for a title-challenge, having achieved European football next season.
