Newcastle United midfielder Hatem Ben Arfa wants the side to push for a top-five finish like they did two seasons ago and believes that will be the best way to forget about last seaon’s failures.

Two seasons ago, The Magpies were pushing Arsenal and Tottenham for a Champions League place, only to fall on the last day after suffering defeat to Everton.

However, last season was one to forget for Alan Pardew and his men as they were locked in a relegation battle all of last season and only just survived the chop to the Championship.

This year’s campaign hasn’t got off to the best of starts either after they were thumped 4-0 to Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium on Monday night, but despite the heavy defeat, Ben Arfa still believes the side can finish in the top-five once again.

“Our objective is to finish in the top 10 and I hope we can finish top five,” he told The Sun.

“That is going to be tough but I’m confident. The Manchester City game has gone and now we have to turn out attention to West Ham on Saturday.

“I will be doing everything for the team to maybe repeat what we did two years ago.

“We will be stronger than last year. There’s confidence in the squad. We think we can do something good this season.”
