Roy Hodgson has recruited the same psychiatrist used for Team GB’s gold winning cyclist team at the World Cup. Hodgson has invited Dr Steve Peters, who currently helps out at Liverpool, to work on his players in Brazil.

“He is a very famous man in that area,” said Hodgson, “he has a fantastic CV working in many different sports. We are happy because we got the man we wanted.”

Peters was part of the team that brought amazing success to Team GB’s cycling team at Beijing in 2008 and in London 2012. He has also worked with Tour De France winners Team Sky and 5 time snooker champion Ronnie O’Sullivan. Hodgson expects his players to enjoy the services of Peters when he joins the squad in June/July for the event. His work at Liverpool has particularly effected Steven Gerrard, who was a fan of Peters before Brendan Rodgers brought him to Anfield.

“He helped me a lot from a personal point of view. He helped me with a groin problem in 2010 when I feared for my career. I saw him in a one-on-one situation and I liked his work and continued to see him, I can feel he helps players if players buy into what he’s trying to do.”

Gerrard was talking ahead of England’s international friendly against Denmark on Wednesday, England’s final game before Hodgson names his squad for the World Cup, beginning in 99 days time.

Tottemham right back Kyle Walker has pulled out of the squad after suffering a groin injury.
