Liverpool were heavily interested in Olympique Lyon midfielder, Houssem Aouar back in 2016 and the 20-year-old midfielder has revealed why he turned down a move to Anfield.
Aouar is a product of the Ligue 1 outfit’s youth academy. He broke into the senior team towards the end of the 2016/17 campaign and is slowly making a name for himself in the European top flight, scoring 6 goals in 24 matches this season.
Aouar told Planete Lyon, “Before I signed my first professional contract with Lyon in July 2016, Liverpool were interested in me. I thought about it hard with those close to me on the decision I needed to take, what was better for my progression. I opted for Lyon because it is the club of my heart and my aim was to succeed here, in my city.”
The midfielder was recently seen taking the pitch against Manchester City in the 2-2 Champions League draw at the Etihad Stadium. Pep Guardiola singled Aouar out with praise and is reported to be even keeping tabs on him along with Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool.
The Spanish head coach said, “We only talk about PSG but there are many good French teams. I was very impressed by the talent of Maxwel Cornet. Aouar is incredible, [Tanguy] Ndombele has a lot of calm. There are many talents in France.”
