Huddersfield have appointed Jan Siewert as their new manager. Siewert was the head coach of Borussia Dortmund’s reserve side and he will replace interim manager Mark Hudson who replaced David Wagner. Hudson managed the Terriers in only one match against Manchester City which they lost 0-3 yesterday.

Siewert did not have a very fruitful playing career as he played for German club TuS Mayen which is now a 6th tier club. Siewert’s playing career ended in 2005 when he was just 23. He worked as the assistant manager of the U-17 and U-18 national teams of Germany before becoming the head coach of German fourth-tier side Rot-Weiss Essen in 2015. Siewert managed the team for a year before becoming the manager of the U19 team of Vfl Bochum. After managing Vfl Bochum for a year, he joined Borussia Dortmund’s reserve team and managed them for two years.

Huddersfield Town’s chairman Dean Hoyle welcomed Siewert, saying, “I’d like to begin by officially welcoming Jan to Huddersfield Town. I’m tremendously excited about working with him as our new Head Coach. Let me start by addressing the obvious. We enjoyed tremendous success under our previous Head Coach, David Wagner, and we’ve subsequently appointed a new Head Coach that bears many similarities to him; a young, aspirational German from Borussia Dortmund II.

However, that does a disservice to Jan, who is his own man. There is much more to this appointment than that. Jan’s name came to our attention in his previous role as Assistant Manager and Under-19 Coach at VfL Bochum. We first spoke with him over two years’ ago and we’ve kept in communication since, watching his progress with interest. His reputation in the game is very good; he’s known as a coach who is ambitious, has many qualities and who has strong philosophies. As such, it came as no surprise to us when he moved to one of the world’s biggest clubs; Borussia Dortmund.”

Huddersfield Town’s first match under Siewert is against Everton next Tuesday.
