I was a spectator last night, says Szczesny

Arsenal goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny has admitted that he thoroughly enjoyed last night’s victory over Napoli at the Emirates Stadium and he even took a cheeky dig at the Italian club after saying he was just a spectator.

The Polish shot-stopper only had to deal with one shot on target from the visitors and only ever touched the ball if he was dealing with a pass-back from Per Mertesacker or Laurent Koscielny.

Two first-half goals from Mesut Ozil and Olivier Giroud gave The Gunners the 2-0 lead and after the game, Szczesny cheekily admitted that he felt like a fan.

“I think for the first half an hour… I don’t remember playing like that for a long time, not just this season,” Szczesny told Arsenal Player. “I was like one of the fans behind the goal, just watching the game, and I couldn’t believe what was going on. We must have a couple of decent players or something! It was very enjoyable to watch.

“I think we had a very strong start, I was getting very bored in goal to be honest for the first half an hour! We were fantastic I thought, we got an early lead and then it was just a matter of defending well and making sure that we did our job correctly, and we did that.”

Last night’s victory puts Arsenal top of Group F, with Borussia Dortmund at home next and Szczesny believes the camp are full of confidence ahead of that tie.

“We’ll be confident, we’ll take on anyone right now,” he said. “I think you could see that in the first half. They will be very tough games and probably very tight but we’re confident that we can get the six points and be safely in the last 16.”
