Gonzalo Higuain has revealed that he was never close to signing for Arsenal in the Summer, despite all the speculation linking him with a move there from Real Madrid.

Throughout the transfer period there was always reports suggesting that the Argentine was close to joining Arsene Wenger’s men, however, nothing ever formal was made and eventually he joined Italian side Napoli, who play Arsenal tonight in the Champions League.

Speaking in an interview ahead of the game, the striker has admitted that he knew the Premier League side were interested, but he also reveals that a deal wasn’t even close and that he has no regrets about going to Seria A instead.

“Yes (I knew they were interested), but I did not speak to them.

“They said Arsenal wanted to sign me, that they were there negotiating, but it was Napoli who bought me.

“They persuaded me with their conviction and I am very grateful to Napoli, to their president, too, for everything he has done for me, and for everything he did to buy me quickly. Knowing how much I was wanted gave me a lot of confidence.

“The manager [Rafa Benitez] spoke very well to me too. It is one of the reasons that convinced me to come. He is a sincere person, an honest person. The things he said have to remain between us, he made it a very easy decision.”
