Mario Balotelli joined Liverpool towards the end of the transfer window for what seemed to be a bargain, at £16m.

Though the Reds sold their top scorer Luis Suarez, Balotelli could still become an important figure at Merseyside.

Speaking at the Soccerex conference in Manchester, Liverpool’s CEO Ayre said: “Liverpool had success and opportunities to develop in the past & didn’t take them. That won’t happen again.”

“Having the right people and trust allows the club to maximise signings like Balotelli, leading to 50k shirt sales.”

Ayre then went on to say that the popularity of the club can be measured byu the growth of the website.

He added: “You can only measure success by the number of people you engage and satisfy.

“Last month we saw 10m unique users and 100 million page views on the official website.”
