Iniesta Set To Sign New Deal

Barcelona’s president Sandro Rosell has revealed that midfield star Andres Iniesta is set to sign a new contract at the current La Liga champions. 

The 29 year old made his senior debut for Barcelona in 2002 and has since gone on to make 305 appearances scoring 30 goals, Rosell has said that the Spanish innternational is ready and close to signing a new deal with the club. 

“Iniesta is a key player for us,” Rosell told TV3 programme Hat-Trick. “It is likely that the next great news for Barcelona will be the renewal of Iniesta’s contract.”

Rosell also spoke about the resignation of Tito Vilanova who had to quit the club due to a relapse in his battle with throat cancer, Barcelona hired Gerardo Martino in his place and has the president has revealed that the former Newell’s Old Boys boss was on a list of three potential targets.

“[Vilanova’s] relapse has been the worst news of my presidency,” he said. “Hopefully he will win his battle but life goes on.”

“We had thought already about Tata Martino the first time Vilanova needed to undergo treatment last season.”

“[Sporting director] (Andoni) Zubizarreta chose the new coach from three names. I put down on the table that Martino would be my tip, nothing more. I will not say who the other two were, I don’t think that is right.”
