Brendan Rodgers is keen to bring in Napoli striker Gonzalo Higuain for a reported £22 million plus Lucas Leiva in exchange.

With Daniel Sturridge out injured and Mario Balotelli and Rickie Lambert having not been able to hit the ground running, Rodgers is forced to dabble in the transfer market for a proven goalscorer.

The enormous hole left by Luis Suarez is proving difficult to fill as was expected.

Napoli boss Rafa Benitez may be tempted by the deal, having bought Lucas to Liverpool back in 2007. Higuain is said to be unhappy in Italy and wants to play Champions League football.

Napoli were beaten in the final Champions League qualification round by Athletic Bilbao, missing out on the millions of revenue, meaning Benitez may have to sell before spending.

With the Italians languishing in 8th place in Serie A, the Argentine Higuain could be on his way out as early as January, when the transfer window reopens.

Higuain has been a relatively prolific scorer throughout his career, netting 161 goals from 356 senior appearances.
