Jack Wilshere wants to be Arsenal captain

Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere has admitted to the club’s official website that he would love to become captain one day.

The 21-year-old has been at the club since he was eight-years-old and he has worked his way up through the ranks from the youth team, to now the first-team playing alongside the likes of Mesut Ozil and Santi Cazorla.

The captaincy at the Emirates has recently been quite the curse for footballers and three out of the last four have actually left the club.

William Gallas, Cesc Fabregas and Robin Van Persie all captained the side and then went on to leave the club, whilst Thomas Vermaelen, the current captain, has been dropped due to some poor form last season.

However, Wilshere is adamant that he wants to be the captain one day, but he knows Arsene Wenger has a lot of leaders in the pack.

“I want to do that [be a leader] for this club,” he told the club’s official website.

“I do feel a bit of responsibility but I have players around to help me.

“Mikel [Arteta] came in, he was the captain at Everton and he’s the vice-captain here and you can tell by the way he is off the pitch, even when he was injured he was in the dressing room and giving us support.

“From the team that I first broke into, a lot of them have gone so I’m one of the few who’s been around. There’s Bacary [Sagna] as well but I’m one of the only midfielders who has been around for a while.

“I’ve grown up at this club and I have captained the club at under-16 level, under-18 level and last season as well I got the armband for 20 minutes or so [against West Ham in January] which was a nice feeling.”
