FC Porto cannot prevent star-striker leaving

Arsenal and Liverpool have been given a transfer boost with the knowledge that FC Porto star Jackson Martinez has a £24.7million release clause in his contract.

The Colombian striker is wanted by both Premier League sides, but according to reports, it’s Arsenal who are favourites to land him after they finished in the top-four ensuring Champions League football for next season.

Martinez to Arsenal

The Gunners have been long-term admirers of Martinez, but his loyalty to Porto kept him in Portugal.

However, he is now ready to complete a move away in order to challenge himself in a more competitive league, and it looks like the Premier League is his likely destination.

The 28-year-old scored 21 goals this season for Porto, and Arsene Wenger sees him as a perfect signing to help out Olivier Giroud and Danny Welbeck.

Arsenal only have two recognised strikers in their squad, so a third is likely to be added this Summer, with Martinez their main-target, and their hopes have been given a major boost.

Porto President Speaks

Porto president Nuno Pinto da Costa has revealed that the club cannot prevent their star-asset leaving over the Summer if a club chooses to activate his release clause.

He said: “He’s a player we want to keep, but we cannot stop someone paying the clause.

“Jackson went on vacation and so when he returns we will try to renew his deal just like last year.”

The clause stands at £24.7m.
