Jamaal Lascelles feels he has formed a formidable partnership with Federico Fernandez in the heart of the Newcastle United backline.
The Argentine arrived on the deadline day at the St James Park as Rafa Benitez had wanted to have a safe pair of legs following an injury to Florian Lejeune who is expected to be on the sidelines for a more prolonged period.
Despite being a late entrant Fernandez has been impressive and has been one of the promising prospects what otherwise has been a pretty underwhelming campaign.
The Magpies are still searching for their first victory of the season and are currently looking for some respite from the relegation zone. The defending duo registered their first clean sheet of the campaign when they kept the Crystal Palace attacker at bay.
Lascelles said, “Feddy is a top centre-half. He is experienced, he’s played in Premier League for a long time, and you can really tell with how he plays.Jamaal
“His covering, his positioning, everything is spot on. When balls go in behind, he knows when to react.
“We work well together and really bounce off each other quite well. He’s vocal like me and, if we play like we did against Palace most weeks, we’ll do very well defensively.”
