Southampton midfielder James Ward-Prowse thinks that a transfer to a big club isn’t the best move for young star Luke Shaw. Shaw has been linked with big money moves to Manchester United and Chelsea over the January transfer window, but Ward-Prowse thinks that staying at Southampton would be better for the 18 year old’s career.

“Obviously there’s a little bit of banter flying around on social networking sites and in the papers,” said Ward-Prowse, only 19 himself, “but that’s normal in football. His feet are on the ground and his head is in the right place, and we all saw what a great performance he put in against Arsenal. This is the best place for him to be at the moment.

Southamton have been having several problems at the club over the last couple of weeks, with the chairman stepping down and a bust-up in training including star signing Dani Osvaldo, but Ward-Prowse insists that morale is still high at the club,

“It hasn’t really affected us in a bad way. Everyone’s positivity has helped us ignore the off-the-field problems, and our performances agaisnt Arsenal and Yeovil in the FA Cup have proved our heads are in the right place.”

Ward-Prowse came of the bench during the 2-2 with the Gunners on Tuesday night, where Southampton led 1-0 before fighting for a point at 2-1 down.
