The Sky Sports pundit made his forceful comments following Arsenal’s 4-1 victory over Aston Villa.

Gyokeres, a £64 million summer signing, managed just five Premier League goals in 17 appearances.

His performance against Villa again drew criticism as he failed to influence the game, despite Arsenal’s dominance.

The contrast became clear when substitute Gabriel Jesus scored a superb curling effort to seal the win.

The Brazilian, recently back from a long-term knee injury, delivered a moment of quality that intensified debate over the starting striker role.

Speaking after the match, Carragher left no room for doubt. He argued that Arsenal’s attacking depth makes Gyokeres’ ongoing selection hard to justify.

“The one negative out of tonight for Arsenal is that Gyokeres should not be starting,” Carragher stated.

“In a couple of games time, when Jesus is a bit more up to speed, he should be starting. He’s a better player than Gyokeres – that’s a fact.”

Carragher also mentioned Kai Havertz as a better central option, suggesting Gyokeres lacks the necessary finesse.

“Havertz or him as the central striker is a better player than Gyokeres,” he added.

The criticism highlights a difficult start for Gyokeres, who arrived with a prolific record from Sporting Lisbon.

Manager Mikel Arteta continues to publicly support his striker, citing a disrupted pre-season and the challenges of adapting to English football.

However, Carragher’s blunt assessment ensures the spotlight will remain firmly on Arsenal’s attack and Arteta’s upcoming team selections.
