Tottenham Hotspur defender Jan Vertonghen said that he hopes to extend his contract with the club which keeps him at the North London club till 2020. Vertonghen joined Tottenham from Ajax in 2012. In 6 years, the 31-year old has played 256 matches for Spurs, scoring 11 goals and providing 5 assists. This season, he has played every minute of Tottenham’s campaign so far, scoring the club’s first goal of the season against Newcastle.

Vertonghen said, “My contract is expiring at the end of the season, but Tottenham have an option to extend it with one year. I think they will take up the option. We’ll see what happens. It’s very hard to finish your career at this level as it demands a lot of your body. But I will try and I’m doing everything I can to stay as fit as possible to compete for as long as I can at this level. Not a lot of players can play here until they’re 36 or 37 but I will do my best to play here as long as I can.”

Jan Vertonghen who is also Belgium’s most capped footballer, is in the squad that will take on Scotland and Iceland. Belgium first take on Scotland at Hampden Park tomorrow. Following this, Belgium begin their UEFA Nations League campaign against Iceland at Reykjavik on September 11.
