Tottenham Hotspur defender set for spell on sidelines

Tottenham Hotspur centre-back Jan Vertonghen has suffered a knee ligament injury and is set for a stint on the sidelines.

The Belgian defender fell awkwardly on his knee during Spurs‘ 3-1 win at Selhurst Park on Saturday against Crystal Palace, and the club have now confirmed that he’s likely to be out of action for a while.

Despite not putting a timeline on his recovery, knee ligament damage usually keeps player out for a few months, with Chelsea‘s Thibaut Courtois suffering a similar injury earlier this season.

Statement

Speaking about the injury, Tottenham have said: “Our medical staff will continue to monitor his progress during his rehabilitation to determine when he will be ready to return to training.”

The injury came after an elbow from Connor Wickham during a corner-kick, which the striker has now been punished for by the FA.
