Jan Vertonghen unhappy playing left-back

Tottenham Hotspur defender Jan Vertonghen has revealed that he is not happy playing left-back and he has demanded the club buy a left-back in January so that he can return to his natural centre-back position.

The former-Ajax man chose to join Spurs over their fierce-rivals Arsenal and he revealed he chose Tottenham because Arsene Wenger told him that they would be using him as a centre-midfielder and that was something he didn’t want to do.

Now at White Hart Lane, Vertonghen has been deployed as a left-back in recent weeks by Andre Villas-Boas and the natural centre-back is not happy with it.

Usual left-back Danny Rose has sustained an injury and due to the lack of depth, Vertonghen has been required to cover for Rose, but he believes it’s time to sign proper cover so that he can remain at centre-back.

‘We have had some injuries on the left of defence at Tottenham this season, and it has often been down to me to fill the gap,’ he said, ahead of Belgium’s game with Japan.

‘Tottenham pay my wages, so I have to accept it, but it doesn’t suit me, and the club know how much I want to play centre-half.

‘I think I have done enough to deserve a place there now, ideally for every game.’
