Brendan Rodgers’ side can move to within four points of league leaders Chelsea with a win against Swansea at Anfield on Sunday.
‘They are not many points behind so they can win the Premier League. Why not?’ Mascherano told the Sunday Express.
‘I have watched Liverpool closely since leaving the club and this season you can see they have improved a lot. They are playing with more confidence and are doing very well.’
The 29-year-old, who made 94 appearances during his time on Merseyside is pleased to see his old side doing so well and believes one player in particular can fire Liverpool to glory come May.
‘I am very happy for the lads because I still have some friends at the club like Steven Gerrard and Lucas.’ said the former Anfield star.
‘For me, Liverpool have a key player, a fantastic player in (Luis) Suarez,’
‘He has a good character. He is the right player for Liverpool because it is not just about being top quality, which he is.
‘He also has a lot of character and is an important part of what Liverpool, under (Brendan) Rodgers, are achieving.’
