Jay Rodriguez is stalling over a new long term deal at Southampton, which has alerted both Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur in the race for his sugnature, according to the Daily Express.

Rodriguez, aged 24 is currently recovering from a recent knee ligament injury he sustained in a 1-0 win aaway at Crystal Palace towards the back end of last season, an injury which kept him out of the World Cup finals in Brazil.

The Burnley born winger, who was one of four Southampton players to make their full England debut’s last season, is in no rush to sign on the dotted line, following the recent departures of Adam Lallana, Ricky Lambert and Luke Shaw, who have all gone onto pastures new.

And his reluctance to pen a new deal has alerted both Spurs and Liverpool, who are both likely to make bids in the coming weeks or so.

Mauricio Pochettino, who managed Southampton last season, has recently took over at Spurs, and is hopeful that a bid of around ÂŁ15 million would be enough to prize him away from the South Coast.

Meanwhile Liverpool have already signed two ex Southampton players, with Ricky Lambert and Adam Lallana penning deals in previous weeks.

Rodgers has cash to burn, having couped around ÂŁ75 million from the sale of Luis Suarez to Barcelona.
