Jermain Defoe and Roberto Soldado vying for one-starting spot

Tottenham Hotspur manager Andre Villas-Boas has revealed that both Jermain Defoe and Roberto Soldado are in direct competition with each other over the one striker’s spot in his starting line-up.

The new summer signing has been chosen over Defoe for the Premier League games so far this season, but the Englishman started and bagged a brace in last night’s Europa League victory.

Despite the impressive performances from both Defoe and Soldado this season, Villas-Boas is still against playing two up front and will remain picking from just one of them to start matches.

“JD is doing well. He and Soldado are competing and all of their performances have been excellent,” Villas-Boas said.

“There is not one single negative thing I can say about the performances of Soldado and JD. At the moment we are playing with one striker up front and a number 10.

“We’ve scored 15 goals in seven games and conceded one, which are good numbers for us, so we haven’t yet seen a reason to change to 4-4-2 but that is definitely an option for the future.”
