Tottenham Hotspur striker Jermain Defoe knows that he needs to start getting game-time in order to cement a place in the England team for next year’s World Cup in Brazil.

The Spurs forward has fallen down the pecking order at White Hart Lane since the arrival of Roberto Soldado and with Daniel Sturridge and Rickie Lambert both being impressive so far this season, Defoe knows that he needs to make a name for himself this season.

Not only will he be competing with Sturridge and Lambert, there will also be Wayne Rooney, Danny Welbeck, Andy Carroll and Theo Walcott all fighting for a striker’s role at next year’s World Cup and the Spurs-man desperately wants more game-time.

“In a World Cup year you have got to play, it’s as simple as that.

“To get into any England squad, it’s based on merit. So you have got to play, I understand that. I also understand that it’s a long season, there are so many games to go and a lot of football to be played. I just have to try and keep myself sharp and fit.

“It has been really frustrating. When you have played in a World Cup and have been involved with the England squad for a number of years, it’s just the best thing in the world – representing your country at that level. You want to play.”
