Centre-back in talks with Everton over new deal

Everton defender John Stones has told the club that if he were to sign a new deal, he would want a release clause inserted of around £38million.

The 21-year-old was subject to three formal bids from Chelsea throughout the summer, but all three were turned down by The Toffees who stood firm from the relentless pressure of the Premier League champions.

Chelsea offered as high as £35m for the centre-back, according to reports, but after their last bid was rejected, they turned their attentions elsewhere and signed two different defenders on the cheap on deadline day.

However, their hopes of signing the England international could be boosted with a release clause which could be activated in a new deal.

Release Clause

Stones and Everton are in talks over a new contract, and the defender has informed the club that he will only pen a new deal if a £38m release clause is inserted in his deal.

This means if any club chooses to match that price, Everton will have to accept.

It’s believed Roberto Martinez wants around £40m but the defender, but he may accept the £38m release clause if a new deal is signed.

Stones currently earns around £30k-a-week at Goodison Park, but that is set to be doubled if he puts pen to paper.

As for Chelsea, they could renew their interest in January with Jose Mourinho desperate to bring him to Stamford Bridge as a long-term replacement for John Terry.
