Liverpool vice-captain will pen five-year contract

Liverpool midfielder Jordan Henderson is close to agreeing a new five-year deal worth around £100k-a-week.

The vice-captain has been in talks with officials from Anfield for the past few months, but snubbed their initial offer as he wanted a bigger salary.

However, according to reports, the Liverpool board have now met Henderson’s demands of around £100k, and he’s likely to sign it by the end of this week.

Captain for next year

The 24-year-old’s current deal expires next Summer and his refusal to sign a new deal alarmed figures at the club that he may leave on a free this time next year.

Henderson is expected to take over as captain next season once Steven Gerrard leaves to join LA Galaxy and the news that he has signed a new deal will come as a welcome boost to Liverpool fans.

The club have had a torrid month, losing in the FA Cup Semi-Final to Aston Villa and back-to-back defeats against Manchester United and Arsenal all-but ruined their Champions League hopes.
