Chelsea boss wanted to land Aston Villa star before he moved to Liverpool

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho wanted to sign Aston Villa striker Christian Benteke over the summer, but saw the proposed move blocked by the board as they refused to meet his release clause.

Mourinho was desperate to add the Belgium international to his squad, in order to provide competition to Diego Costa following Didier Drogba‘s exit from the club.

However, after Villa revealed they wouldn’t sell for anything less than his release clause, which was ÂŁ32.4million, the Blues board put a stop to Mourinho‘s interest and told him to look elsewhere.

Eventually Chelsea landed Radamel Falcao on a season-long loan from AS Monaco, but Benteke was Mourinho’s number-one target.

Talks Were Held

The Special One had even held talks with Eden Hazard regarding his national team-mate, and also spoke to the 24-year-old’s agent regarding a potential move.

Sadly for Mourinho, Benteke ended up at Liverpool after Brendan Rodgers agreed to meet the release clause.
