Jose Mourinho has confirmed Victor Lindelof is set for a longer spell on the sidelines.

The Swedish defender has been an ever present in the Manchester United backline but injured himself in the 0-0 draw against Crystal Palace. Lindelof looked visibly in pain but as Mourinho used his three substitutions the defender continued with the injury and even made an important clearance in the dying minutes.

Unite are set to face Young Boys in the Champions League and a win would guarantee them a place in the knockout stages. With Lindelof out injured the gaffer now has a very limited number of options at his disposal and we could see a new defensive pair on Tuesday.

Mourinho said, “He will be out for quite a while.

“We have [Eric] Bailly and [Phil] Jones. Marcos Rojo has some little injury and Victor an injury – a proper injury that will keep him out for a while. So Jones, [Chris] Smalling, Bailly are the three we have at this time.

“He [Lindelof] will have a scan tomorrow but by the experience of the medical department, and the feeling of the player, he has a muscular problem. A muscular problem takes time.

“If we have him for the Christmas period – where we need, if possible, every player to be available for that difficult period until the Newcastle match on January 2 – if we can have Victor available for that period it will be good..
