Jose Mourinho has revealed that Henrikh Mkhitaryan’s commitment won his role back in the Manchester United starting line-up.

The £26million summer signing from German giants Borussia Dortmund struggled to get to terms with life at the Theatre of Dreams, and didn’t play for nearly two months after being substituted at half-time in their defeat against rivals Manchester City.

However, Mkhitaryan has been outstanding for United since his return to the side, with the winger or playmaker bagging in his last two games against Zorya Luhansk and Tottenham Hotspur.

Mourinho was full of praise for the 27-year-old and his commitment during his patchy start at the club.

“I had players with a similar process of adaptation, we bought him, it was not a player who was chosen by other people,” Mourinho said.

“We bought him because I asked the club to do it. I like the player, I analysed the player, it’s [a bit] more frustrating for me if everything went wrong – [but] he needed a period of adaptation at every level.

“And he was very professional, he didn’t find excuses, another player might blame the manager, the pitch, the weather, like many other players do.

“He was quiet, closed his mouth, waiting his opportunity and he’s playing so good now.

“Hopefully it’s not a few matches out that are going to stop his evolution.”
