Jose Mourinho was angered by Michael Owen’s criticism towards Zlatan Ibrahimovic and hit back with comments regarding the former Liverpool striker’s record at Manchester United.

The Portuguese gaffer has been left unimpressed with the way certain pundits have talked about the Sweden captain so far this term and defended the 35-year-old striker by looking at how Owen got on while at Old Trafford.

Ibrahimovic has netted 13 goals in his first five months at the Theatre of Dreams as well as him publicly saying that he could have had a couple more after missing some fine goalscoring opportunities.

Despite that, the Swede has only scored four fewer than what Owen managed in his three years with the Red Devils, and the self-named ‘Special One’ ensured that Owen didn’t forget about his own tally.

“Zlatan in spite of your colleague Michael Owen, who doesn’t like him, the fact is Zlatan will score more goals in one season than he managed in three seasons at Manchester United,” he told BT Sport.

“He scored 17 goals in three seasons. Zlatan is almost there in six months so he’s not a bad choice for us.”
