Outgoing Dortmund manager gives Reds some food for thought

According to reports, Jurgen Klopp has admitted Liverpool need to make changes to their transfer policy if they want him to be their next manager.

Klopp is bringing his seven year spell as Borussia Dortmund manager to an end today, as he looks to go out in style by winning his second DFB-Pokal as a manager against Wolfsburg.

However, the German has expressed his desire to not take a break from management and has been strongly tipped as the favourite to take the Anfield hot seat should Brendan Rodgers leave in the summer.

The FSG have some decisions to make

Liverpool owners, the Fenway Sports Group, are yet to decide Brendan Rodgers’ future as manager of the club after a disappointing campaign. The FSG company president Mike Gordon will meet Rodgers this week as they review the season and discuss the best way forward for the club.

They are also well aware that Klopp has publicly suggested he would take the Reds job if it was offered to him, but he has recently stated that there would need to be some changes in their approach as owners.

The Fenway Sports Group have a four man committee who decide who the club buys and sells with the manager have the final say on the matter. Klopp doesn’t want to work this way, as he wants full control of his transfers.

It is evident that this method hasn’t always worked, in Rodgers’ three years in charge at Anfield he has signed a total of 23 players, but the only really successful signings have been Daniel Sturridge and Phillipe Coutinho.

In pre-season Rodgers spent approximately ÂŁ117 million on seven players, with only Emre Can being relatively successful. The likes of Mario Balotelli and Dejan Lovren amongst others have been the subject of much criticism.

Ironically, Brendan Rodgers’ Liverpool defeated Jurgen Klopp’s Borussia Dortmund 4-0 in a pre-season friendly at Anfield.
