Jurgen Klopp has hit back at Jose Mourinho insisting Liverpool are not about trophies.
Jose Mourinho earlier insisted during the pre-match press conference ahead of their clash with Liverpool clubs need trophies to prove their credentials on the big stage.
Despite coming close on a number of occasions Klopp is yet to deliver a trophy at Anfield while Mourinho has three trophies in his kitty including the prestigious Europa League and the EFL Cup.
Liverpool’s inability to win a major trophy has been a major barrier in their ambition. But the Reds have looked full of intent this season and are currently leading the Premier league table.
They also secured their passage to the Champions League last 16 with a slender victory over Napoli in the last match of the group stage.
Klopp said, “Do I have to? Do I have to win it? That might be what people remember but what I have to do is make the best of the things the club is offering me, that is what I believe in
“If people say the Champions League campaign last season was not a success because we didn’t win the final then I cannot change that. Was it the most successful? No, but the ride was brilliant. I enjoyed it a lot.
“Going to the final was fantastic but in life – in all departments of life, including your job – if only the best counts and effort doesn’t count then life is s***.”
