Kasey McAteer backs Chukwuemeka to shine under new Chelsea boss Maresca
Kasey McAteer, Leicester City midfielder, has thrown his support behind Chelsea’s young talent Carney Chukwuemeka.
McAteer believes Chukwuemeka will blossom under the guidance of Chelsea’s new manager, Enzo Maresca.
Maresca’s appointment sent shockwaves through Chelsea after a strong finish under Mauricio Pochettino.
However, Todd Boehly, the club’s owner, opted for a youthful coach with a philosophy similar to Pep Guardiola’s successful tactics.
McAteer, a childhood friend of Chukwuemeka, sees a perfect fit.
“In that attacking midfield role, the eight role,” McAteer said on Alex Goldberg’s show,
“Carney’s got the size, the athleticism, everything you need to be a great player.”
“With Enzo [Maresca] at the helm, I really feel like he can flourish if given the chance,” McAteer continued.
“Knowing Carney, I’m sure he’ll deliver on the pitch. I’ve got my fingers crossed for him for sure.”
Maresca’s preference for a physical presence in midfield is no secret. The Italian coach struggled last season when key midfield enforcers were unavailable.
This bodes well for Chukwuemeka, a 6ft 2 powerhouse comfortable playing in the “pockets” of the midfield – another area Maresca values highly.
McAteer’s comments add fuel to the fire of anticipation surrounding Chukwuemeka’s potential under Maresca. With the right opportunity, the youngster could be primed for a breakout season at Chelsea.
