The Gunners legend believes the club made a mistake letting the midfielder join Bournemouth on loan

Martin Keown believes Arsenal should have kept Jack Wilshere at the club while Granit Xhaka adjusts to English football.

Xhaka has had mixed fortunes in the midfield for the Gunners so far this campaign, with some performances impressing more than others. As for his disciplinary record, he’s already received four yellows and one red card.

At times, it has left Arsenal wondering who to play in the defensive midfield and central midfield roles for them. According to legend Martin Keown, the answer to their problems has been shipped out on loan.

Wilshere answer to problems

He believes that Jack Wilshere – who is currently out on loan at Bournemouth – could have played instead of Xhaka while the Switzerland international gets used to English football and the Premier League.

Keown told the BBC: “To look at their team, to look at the compartments, you’d say their defence looks solid, you’d say the top three look pretty decent, the midfield is a concern, it’s a worry.

“It’s ironic that Jack Wilshere is sitting in the stand [against Bournemouth].

“Maybe he would have been the answer this season but of course he’s on loan to Bournemouth. It was a gamble (letting Wilshere go on loan).”

Wilshere will spend the rest of the campaign with Bournemouth but Keown’s words make you think – Could Wilshere have been a huge help to the Gunners this season? Were they right to let him leave on loan?

We’ll have to see how he does for Bournemouth over the course of the rest of the campaign.
