Before deciding on his future, Kepa Arrizabalaga is said to have a conversation with Enzo Maresca, the new manager of Chelsea. After regular Los Blancos goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois tore his ACL, missing much of the season, Arrizabalaga signed with Real Madrid last summer on a season-long loan.

Kepa played in 20 games across all competitions while on loan at Real Madrid, where he helped the Spanish powerhouses win the Champions League and La Liga titles.

The Spaniard would only make a comeback with assurances of playing time, but Maresca’s arrival at Stamford Bridge has also created the possibility of one. When Maresca, the new Chelsea head coach, gets back from vacation later this month, that would need a heart-to-heart conversation.

After playing for Real Madrid, will Kepa Arrizabalaga return to Chelsea?

As his season-long loan at Real Madrid draws to a conclusion, Kepa Arrizabalaga finds himself in a difficult situation. After spending a record-breaking £72 million to join Chelsea from Athletic Bilbao in 2018, the 29-year-old Spaniard’s future at Stamford Bridge is still unknown.

After falling to third place in the standings behind Ukrainian Andriy Lunin and the healthy-again Thibaut Courtois, the Spanish goalie’s loan at Real Madrid is up. According to The Sun, Madrid is willing to hold onto him, but only if he signs a new 12-month loan or transfers for free.

“Everything has been put on hold for a few weeks due to the uncertainty surrounding Chelsea’s next manager,” according to the report.
