Liverpool will send striker Daniel Sturridge for another on a knee injury that will delay his first game under newly appointed manager Jurgen Klopp.

The 26-year-old has been unavailable for Klopp’s first two games in charge of the Reds after damaging a joint following a tightly contested challenge with team-mate Jordan Ibe in training last week.

Sturridge will not train with the squad today, Klopp said: “We spoke a few minutes ago with him. It’s not much better.

“With Daniel’s injury we have to see day by day.

“If he can train for example tomorrow, if, completely normal then he is an option because his break has not been too long.

“But I have to wait for this.

“Today we have another treatment and another scan maybe because there is still a little bit of fluid inside the knee. It’s day by day.” he added.

The England international played 14 out of 18 league games after arriving at Anfield from Chelsea in the 2012/13 campaign and 29 out of 39 the following season.

However, Sturridge’s campaign faded last season after thigh and calf injuries kept on reoccurring and it was ended prematurely when he had surgery on his hip and spent four months in the United States undergoing rehab.

He made just 12 appearances out of a possible 38, playing just 750 minutes out of what could have been 3,420 minutes.

The forward featured in three games prior to Brendan Rodgers being sacked this term.

Liverpool host Southampton on Sunday with Klopp searching for his first win as Liverpool boss after drawing with Tottenham Hotspur and Rubin Kazan in his time with the Merseysiders so far.
