Everton suffered a 3-1 defeat at the hands of Manchester City in the Premier League away from home on Saturday. Gabriel Jesus put the hosts two goals up before Dominic Calvert-Lewin pulled one back but Raheem Sterling put the game beyond Everton’s reach with a headed goal off Leroy Sane’s chip.

The Toffees did not see much of the ball in the first half but defended with a lot of resilience. However, Yerry Mina and Kurt Zouma were caught out by the intelligent run of Gabriel Jesus who made no mistake in slotting the ball past Jordan Pickford.

Everton had a few half chances which fell to Richarlison but the Brazilian was totally wayward with his shooting and failed to hit the target. Everton kept on chasing the game but Manchester City were the better side and managed to bag all three points.

Chelsea loanee Kurt Zouma has impressed at Merseyside this season, forming a formidable pairing with Michael Keane before Yerry Mina made his debut. The Frenchman has praised his teammates for their efforts against Manchester City and spoke about the positives from the defeat.

“We are very disappointed but we tried to play our football,” he told the club’s official website.

“We knew they are strong pressing the ball and are strong on the counter-attack but when you try to push forward you have to take risks and we did.”

“Unfortunately it didn’t go for us but I think we created chances and we can be happy that we tried to play. It’s a defeat but we need to move on.

“The goal gave us a bit more confidence but then we conceded the third goal too quickly. In football, you have to be prepared for everything.

“We did our job, we tried to play the way we wanted to. We took our risks but unfortunately, we lost. As I said, we need to move on to next week. We have another important game at home and we will try to win that.”
