The pair were embroiled in a disreputable brawl midway through the first half after Gary Cahill committed a heavy challenge on Alexis Sanchez, which saw the English defender receive a yellow card. And Koscielny has admitted that is why Wenger lost it with Portuguese Mourinho.

‘There is a long history of bitterness between them,’ he said.

‘The coach (Wenger) was upset because three days before Alexis Sanchez had received the same challenge against Galatasaray (in the Champions League) and then the player had also only received a yellow card.’

The Frenchman was also questioned about his latest offence on Eden Hazard in the penalty box which gave Chelsea a chance from 12 yards and eventually the lead after the Belgian converted from the spot kick. He said: ‘If only I could give them away when we are leading 4-0!

‘Unfortunately, we do not choose. It’s something I have to resolve earlier in the play.

‘Hence, either I let him score or I try to get the ball. I do not pass judgement on what you think of my games or my mistakes.

‘The most important thing is to be good for Arsenal. Everyone makes mistakes, you have to recover.’
