Barcelona manager, Ernesto Valverde stated that Lionel Messi is going to get looked at by doctors after the Argentine sustained a facial injury in the Champions League win over Manchester United.

During the second half of the 0-1 victory at Old Trafford, Messi got run over by Chris Smalling in what was ruled as a fair challenge by the referee. The defender’s hands ended up slamming against the 31-year-old’s face and immediately blood started to gush out of his face.

After getting treated, he did return to play out the remainder of the fixture. Valverde said in the post-match interview, “Messi wasn’t so comfortable after the blow. We have to examine him tomorrow to see how he is. He was strong, but he has quite a significant bruise.”

The Blaugrana were not their usual dominant self but they did manage to collect an important away goal.

“When you see the atmosphere here and the team they have and it being the Champions League, it’s hard to win here,” Valverde added. “It was a difficult game and complicated at times, but we had the clearest chances.”

The second leg is due to be held on 17 April at the Camp Nou.
