Liverpool and Arsenal monitor Milner

Now the January transfer window is open, Liverpool and Arsenal are looking to strengthen by signing midfielder James Milner.

The current Manchester City player and England international rejected new contract talks in pre-season and wanted to see if he would play an adequate number of games this season under Manuel Pellegrini before re-opening negotiations with the club about an extension.

So far this season, Milner has played a vital role in City’s success.

He appeared in all six of City’s Champions League group games this campaign, contributing a goal against CSKA Moscow and helping them qualify for the last 16 as runners up.

Also, in the Premier League he has made 18 appearances so far, assisting five goals which have fired the Champions into second place; level on points with leaders Chelsea.

More recently, City have used Milner in a ‘false nine’ role rather than his more familiar midfield positions because Pellegrini has been without main strikers Sergio Aguero and Edin Dzeko through multiple injuries.

Milner came on as substitute against Sheffield Wednesday this weekend in the FA Cup third round, again to play up front and scored a late double to give City a 2-1 victory after trailing 1-0 for so long.

Such form has seen Manuel Pellegrini be asked about re-opening contract negotiations with Milner.

The City boss said “There is no news. I hope we will find an arrangement.”

He also added “But I think I have said already what I think about James Milner. He is very useful. He always plays with 100 per cent commitment and intensity.

Both Liverpool and Arsenal will be keeping tabs on his contract status. If Milner doesn’t sign this month, City may be forced to sell him rather than lose him on a free in the summer.
