Centre-back to move on a permanent deal to the North-East
Liverpool and Sunderland have agreed a £4m transfer for the sale of Uruguayan centre-back, Sebastian Coates, according to the Liverpool Echo.
The Reds have a deal in place with Sunderland over a permanent deal for Coates – who spent last season on loan at the Stadium of Light, making 13 appearances for the Black Cats.
His time on Weir-side was hampered by injuries, however he did enjoy a run in the first-team set-up, under Dick Advocaat towards the end of the season, helping Sunderland to top-flight survival.
Liverpool’s summer clear-out will start with the 24-year-old, who signed for the Anfield outfit for £5m, back in 2011.
Surplus to requirements:
The Uruguay international, who featured for his country in the Copa America this summer, found chances limited at Liverpool during his four-years, with Martin Skrtel, Mamadou Sakho, Dejan Lovren and Kolo Toure all ahead of him in the pecking order.
Liverpool’s new signing from Charlton Athletic, Joe Gomez, is another central-defensive option for Brendan Rodgers’ side.
The sale of Coates will go someway to funding the summer signings for Liverpool, who are expected to tie up a £12m deal to sign Southampton’s Nathaniel Clyne, who will join Danny Ings, Adam Bogdan, James Milner and Roberto Firmino, as summer signings.
