Liverpool are not Premier League title contenders

The Reds, who finished seventh last season and eighth the previous year, lie fourth in the table, eight points behind leaders Arsenal.

“I don’t see ourselves as title contenders,” former Swansea boss Rodgers told BBC Sport.

“So, I wouldn’t say for us this year, no. We wouldn’t be challengers for it. As a team, it’s too early for that.”

Liverpool, who host the Gunners at Anfield on Saturday, are six points behind both Manchester City and Chelsea, who are second and third respectively.

“I was at Manchester City versus Chelsea during the week, and the squads these clubs have, they’re set up in order to fight for the titles,” said Rodgers of the 1-1 draw at the Etihad Stadium on Monday.

“I think people have asked ‘can we play a part in it?’ Of course we can, because we’ve been up there all season. But you only have to look at the squads of the other teams.”

Liverpool have not finished in the Premier League’s top four since 2009, when they were runners-up. The following season’s Champions League, when the Reds failed to get past the group stage, was their last appearance in Europe’s leading club competition.

‘We’re a team and a group that is still evolving,” added former Swansea boss Rodgers, who took over at Anfield in the summer of 2012.

“We’ve gone from eighth to seventh last year, and we’re now looking at making a big jump into the top four. It doesn’t mean it’s any lack of ambition, it’s the reality.”
