Red Devils’ rivals monitoring the situation of England defenders

Liverpool and Arsenal are monitoring the futures of Luke Shaw and Chris Smalling respectively, following their bust up with Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho.

The Portuguese questioned the players’ willingness to play through the pain barrier; following their absence in their recent fixture away to Swansea City.

Smalling, it was later revealed, had recently been playing with a broken toe, while Shaw has not long returned to full fitness following a serious leg break suffered in September 2015.

Jurgen Klopp is looking for a new left-back, having used midfielder James Milner as a left-back for much of this season, having lost faith in the defensive capabilities of Alberto Moreno.

Meanwhile, Arsenal have a long-standing interest in Smalling, who, along with Shaw, have missed international duty with England.

However, it remains to be seen whether United would even consider doing business with their biggest rivals.
